When I began the Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership and Technical Management (OLTM) program at Lower Columbia College, I had already spent several years leading technical industrial manufacturing teams. My background had provided a strong foundation in electrical automation, reliability, maintenance management, and team leadership. However, I recognized that effective leadership requires more than technical expertise and day-to-day management experience. I wanted to develop a broader understanding and develop the skills necessary to influence larger scale organizational objectives.
Throughout the program, I gained valuable insight into leadership, financial management, organizational development, change management, effective communication, and building high-performing teams. One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of viewing challenges through both operational and business perspectives. While technical solutions remain essential to my foundation, sustainable success often depends on communication, alignment and long-term vision.
The coursework challenged me to think beyond immediate technical problems and consider the broader impacts of leadership decisions. Topics such as transformational leadership, organizational culture, coaching and mentoring, conflict resolution, and change management strengthened my ability to build alignment, develop team capability, and connect my daily decision-making to long-term organizational goals.
As I look toward the future, the OLTM program has broadened my perspective and reinforced my commitment to lifelong leadership development. It strengthened my understanding of how organizational systems, people, and strategy work together to drive performance. I intend to continue applying these principles as I pursue opportunities to lead larger initiatives, develop high-performing teams, and create meaningful organizational impact.
